Great piece, Art, and a topic that is often ignored by leadership writers. Knowing fear and embracing it is a fundamental part of a leader's never-ending journey. I would add to your post that admitting that you don't have all the answers as a manager is a big step forward. To say openly to your staff that you don't know the answer is actually self-empowering.

I wrote a piece a few years ago entitled "Know Fear: How to Create Strong Working Relationships Through Hands-On Leadership." Anyone interested in a copy can email me through my website and I'll send it to you.

Meg, thanks for your comment and for sharing your passion on the topic. I'm heading over to your site as well to read your post. Developing the courage to fail seems to be a key to ultimately succeeding. Thanks as well for sharing the post! Best, Art

Art I love this post! I wrote on this exact topic yesterday but more autobiographically than instructively. I think your point about practice is the one I think is the key. If you never try you can't get the skills so you really need a way to find your brave self and be willing to fail once in awhile.

thanks for writing this down, I am trying regularly to pay it forward myself, starting with forwarding this post around to others.

Mary Jo, great observation on the "I can't do this" description. And as for coaches, any leader would be fortunate to engage you as a coach! Thanks as always for reading and sharing your insights. -Art

These are wonderful observations, Art. Thanks for bringing the dirty little secret of "fear" out of the closet. I often find that fear "masks" as anger, impatience and blaming (or all three).

The instigation behind the fear is "I can't do this", whatever "this" is. A good coach or mentor can assist in transforming the fear by assisting the leader in taking small steps and risks (in the beginning) to get some success and move on to the really big stuff. Love it when that happens!
